Sammy didn't quite want to come close to me at first, but that changed rapidly. At eight in the morning, weekdays or weekend, he'd come near the bed and start complaining, until he'd get his food. First, with loud, complaining cries, then by jumping on the bed - still carefully avoiding my body. After a few days, he started to come in during the night, lie on the bed a bit closer to me. That made me feel chuffed, especially when I could stroke him and he'd purr - well, I said to myself, you did it, you're in.
But it was not to be like that. Getting more and more confident,
Sammy now pushed his getting up time earlier and
earlier, crying out loud from five in the morning... I tried to
talk him out of it, but he didn't listen. Instead, he started to march across
the pillows in the early morning, first past my head, then just
stepping over me. To get attention, he started nibbling on me
as well, and in days, the soft chews became bites.
I put him out of the bedroom, closed off the bedroom door. I could
hear him screach, claws on the floor. Then he started to jump the
door. All in all it took him a noisy half an hour to figure out
how to open the bedroom door. Six in the morning, I badly want to sleep,
and he starts walking the pillows and my head again, claws out.
And my nose started running. I didn't know I was allergic to cats.
Well, maybe I wasn't. Or maybe just to him... this is getting way out
of hand...
So, now I sleep alone again. I liked having him near my feet (sure
beats a hot water bottle) or even within strokes' length, but I gave
him a finger and he scratched my whole hand. So I throw him out
of the bedroom at night, close the door and hang a chair on the
handle - he hasn't found a way around that.
But looking at the door, with that chair hanging off it, its
legs hovering just above the floor, I can't help feeling that I've
barricaded my door to keep him out. People don't keep cats. Cats
keep people.
So play it, Sam.
