Italia - Fondo-Santiago
In the 13th century, as the black plague swept Europe, the town
of Fondo was hit hard. As there were only seven inhabitants left
alive, the people vowed that if they'd survive, they would all make the
pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. They survived, and it was the
start of a strong tradition. Not only in people from the village
making the long trek themselves, but also
in providing shelter for passing pilgrims.
Every year, the town commemorates this dramatic event by staging
a 'welcome to the pilgrims' procession. And this year,
I was drafted, too, to play a monk.
